Kola music Review for ‘#40’

What do you get if you cross a poet laureate and a guitarist? No punch line here I'm afraid, but to be fair I'm shite at jokes. Rose&Cloud are though, exactly that.

A duo comprising of poet Emily Rose Galvin and guitarist John Macleod, this is their second EP, entitled #40. The guitar is minimal electric, free, light and floaty at times, it almost disappears in places, as its drawn towards the spoken word musings, like an object being sucked towards a black hole, its consumed and ends up creating a whole new sound. If you want something to dance to this isn't the one for you, but if you get off on fantastic use of language, where every word and sentence has a thousand meanings then take a seat. Its clearly a personal journey for the author but the broadness at first listen disguises the intricacies of the word play. Take what you like from it, take what you need from it but its not so clever it ends up eating itself. Solstice is a beautiful tale of summers pleasures, rustic and rural, that hides its darkness well for the most part, but the clouds are there if you look up, but ultimately like the sunshine after rain, it boasts a quiet determination. Love, loss and these strange days of isolation come and go over the fairly short running time, but i found it a revelation. so personal yet so universal. so put your dancing shoes away for 15 minutes and stop to absorb Rose&Cloud. 9/10
